This 1929 color lithograph, printed in Warsaw, presents Upper Silesia, the mining and factory district in southern Poland, as a showcase for the country's industry. Its subjects are miners, factories, and industrial work, which set it apart from posters that celebrate Polish landscape or culture. Upper Silesia was rich in coal, zinc, and lead, and after the 1921 plebiscite and partition it was divided between Poland and Germany, so the Polish part carried particular weight for the young state. The poster was issued under the Ministry of Communications and aimed to promote Poland abroad, presenting its heavy industry as a sign of economic strength.
