Borysław was one of the most productive oil towns in interwar Poland, and this chromolithograph shows its drilling rigs rising above the landscape. The poster was issued under the Polish State Railways to encourage travel to the region, so the image of industry was meant to attract visitors as much as to document the oilfields. Galicia, where Borysław lies, had been an early center of the modern oil industry in the nineteenth century, and by the 1920s and 1930s the town's wells and rigs were a familiar symbol of Polish industrial enterprise. Bogdan Nowakowski's bold color design reflects the period's travel posters, which blended modern graphic style with the promise of new places to see.
