The old bridge at Pest, which linked the Hungarian city with Buda across the Danube, is the focus here, shown before the Széchenyi Chain Bridge opened in 1849. The etching and engraving follow a drawing by William Henry Bartlett and were worked by E. Brandard, and the record notes a religious procession among the crowd on the bridge. The hand coloring added to this 1838 print brightens the river, the bridge, and the city behind it. Bartlett's travel views of central Europe were widely circulated in the 1830s and 1840s, so the sheet offers a glimpse of Pest just before its rapid growth.
