This poster advertises the Harwich-Hook service, the steamer route that carried travelers between Harwich in England and the Hook of Holland, and it pairs Dutch clothing with a windmill to signal the destination. The London & North Eastern Railway, formed in 1923 from a merger of several companies, used posters like this to draw holidaymakers to the Continent. Austin Cooper's color lithograph relies on regional dress and windmills as shorthand for the Netherlands, a motif railway advertisers leaned on through the 1920s. Its tall format suited display on station platforms and in booking offices.
