Looking west down the dromos, this color lithograph shows the restored approach to the pylons of the Temple of Amun at Karnak, near Thebes in Upper Egypt. The temple complex grew over many centuries, and its towering gateways and avenue of sphinxes made it one of the most celebrated religious sites of the ancient world. Cosack & Company of Buffalo, New York, produced the print around 1887 as plate 34 for Samuel August Binion's *Ancient Egypt or Mizraim*, and its reconstructed view reflects how late nineteenth-century Americans imagined pharaonic architecture.
