Written in French rather than German, the title *Sur les routes d'Allemagne* suggests the poster was meant for travelers from French-speaking countries, which sets it apart from most domestic German travel posters of the period. Ludwig Hohlwein, one of Germany's best-known commercial artists, designed it for the Reichsbahnzentrale für den Deutschen Reiseverkehr, the central office that promoted travel on the national railway. His bold silhouettes and flat areas of color reflect the graphic style he refined through the 1920s and 1930s. The record dates the print to about 1935, when the government was actively encouraging tourism within Germany.
