Few gates carry as much history as the Brandenburg Gate, and this photochrom shows it in rich color from the 1890s. Built between 1788 and 1791 to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the neoclassical gateway is crowned by Johann Gottfried Schadow's bronze chariot, the Quadriga, carrying the winged figure of Victoria. Napoleon carried the statue off to Paris in 1806, and it returned to Berlin in 1814 after his defeat. The Zürich firm Photoglob, which issued this view as number 18326, produced color prints like this one for a wide market of travelers and collectors.
