In 1899, Nome was a raw beach camp on the Seward Peninsula, on the Bering Sea coast of what was then the District of Alaska. Prospectors had found gold in the sand and gravel near the shore after 1898, and the rush brought thousands of men to a settlement that had almost no streets, wharves, or permanent buildings. Because the shallow coast had no harbor, ships anchored offshore and passengers and freight came ashore in lighters and small boats. Miners in town talked constantly about claims on the beaches and creeks, the price of supplies, and the steamers expected from Seattle and San Francisco. The camp's tents and frame buildings were still new, and most people there knew the place mainly as the center of the gold stampede.
