Nome, Alaska, in 1899 was a tent town of roughly a year and a half's standing, built along the Bering Sea shore of the Seward Peninsula. The name came from a blank on an old British chart, where a surveyor's note reading "? Name" was later read as "Cape Nome," and the label stuck to the settlement that grew up beneath it. Front Street and the streets behind it were lined with canvas and board buildings, and the summer season brought in men who would dig through the frozen ground during the long, dark winters that followed. Those who lived there knew Nome as a place where a claim could make a man rich in one season and where the next storm off the sound could wipe out a camp's supplies.
