In 1915, Rampart City was a small river settlement on the Yukon in interior Alaska, well below the population its gold strikes had once drawn. Fairbanks had grown into the interior's larger commercial center, and much of the region's trade and mining money moved there instead. Rampart's remaining economy rested on placer mining, trading stores, and the steamboats that carried freight and passengers along the Yukon during the open season. Construction of the Alaska Railroad was getting underway that same decade, and residents followed news of a planned rail line into the interior with interest. Those who stayed through the winter still measured the year by freeze-up and breakup, the seasons that determined when mail and supplies could reach them.
