Skagway, Alaska, in 1915 was a small town that still carried the marks of the Klondike gold rush, when prospectors crowded through its harbor on the way to the Yukon goldfields in 1897 and 1898. The White Pass and Yukon Route railway, completed in 1900, climbed from the town over the coastal mountains to the Yukon interior, and by the 1910s it was the main link for freight and passengers heading north. Much of the local economy rested on that railroad, on steamship traffic to Seattle and other Pacific ports, and on the supply trade that served mining camps in the interior. Residents would have known the town as the gateway to the north, a place still shaped by the boom years and the rough reputation of its early days, including the 1898 gunfight in which the gambler Jefferson "Soapy" Smith was killed.
