Haines, Alaska, in 1915 was a small coastal town at the head of Lynn Canal, shaped by its long history as a meeting place for the Chilkat Tlingit people, whose villages had stood on this shore long before outsiders arrived. Presbyterian missionaries founded a mission here in 1881 and gave the settlement the name Haines, and by the 1910s the community centered on its church, schools, and waterfront. The Klondike gold rush of 1897 to 1898 had drawn traffic north through nearby Skagway and Dyea, and the Dalton Trail, which ran inland from the Chilkat valley, kept some of that trade moving for years afterward. Steamers from Seattle and Skagway brought mail, supplies, and visitors, while the nearby army post at Chilkoot Barracks gave the town a steady government presence. Residents in 1915 would have known Haines as a quiet supply and transport point on the inside passage route.
