Cordova, Alaska, in 1915 was a young port on Prince William Sound, built on the shore of Orca Inlet at the southern end of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway. The railway, completed in the early 1910s, carried copper ore from the Kennecott mines in the interior down to Cordova's docks for shipment south, which made the town the gateway for one of the territory's largest mining operations. Salmon canneries and fishing boats along the Copper River added a second economic base, and the waterfront was busy with freight, fish, and workers moving between the mines and the sea. Residents of the period knew Cordova as a rough, hopeful railroad and fishing town, one of the most important communities in the Alaska of the territorial era.
