Rampart City sat on the Yukon River in interior Alaska in 1899, a rough camp that had sprung up only a year or two earlier after prospectors struck gold in creeks nearby. Miners who had come north from the Klondike and fresh arrivals from the coast crowded the riverbank, where sternwheel steamboats unloaded flour, tools, and whiskey during the short summer season. Life through the long winter was far quieter, with mail and supplies arriving by dog team when the river froze. Within a few years the strikes thinned out, and much of the mining activity shifted to other parts of the interior, leaving Rampart a smaller place than its boom-year crowds had imagined.
