Around 1899, the Yukon Valley in Alaska was a corridor of river traffic and gold-seeking. The Klondike strike across the border in 1896 had sent thousands of prospectors up the river toward Dawson, and steamboats hauling men, mail, and supplies made the trip from St. Michael at the river's mouth. Many of those who had arrived in the rush stayed on, and the rush's end was already showing as word of new strikes at Nome drew miners to the Seward Peninsula in 1899. The valley's small settlements depended on the river for everything, from freight to news, and the coming of an army post at Eagle that year was a sign that the district's government was beginning to take a firmer hold on this remote country.
