Circle City, Alaska, in 1899 was a gold camp on the north bank of the Yukon River, just below the Arctic Circle, that had grown up after placer gold turned up on nearby creeks in 1893. Its population swelled in the mid-1890s as miners and merchants arrived by river steamer and by foot, and it became the largest settlement in the Yukon interior. After the Klondike strike drew many residents across the Canadian border to Dawson City, Circle was shrinking by 1899, its stores and saloons kept alive by the supply trade and a few claims still being worked. People there knew it as a place cut off by winter, where mail and supplies arrived only after the river ice broke up in late spring.
