Nome, on Alaska's Seward Peninsula, was a tent-and-frame boomtown in 1899, only a year and a half after gold was found in the sands of Anvil Creek in late 1898. Thousands of prospectors arrived by steamship from Seattle and San Francisco, and the beach along Norton Sound was crowded with lighters unloading supplies, since the town had no harbor and freight had to be carried ashore by hand or by small boats. Miners worked the gold-bearing beach gravels with sluices and rockers, and the community quickly built stores, saloons, churches and a newspaper. Residents in 1899 knew the town for its wild growth, its lack of established law, and the sudden fortunes and failures that marked its first gold rush years.
