By 1908 Nome, on the Seward Peninsula, had moved past the frantic first years of its gold rush, though mining still set the town's pace. Hand-worked beach claims were giving way to larger operations, including the early gold dredges and bench diggings that required more capital than a single miner with a pick and sluice box could raise. The Wild Goose Railroad, which ran inland from town toward the creek mines, carried ore, timber, and supplies over a route that had been unthinkable only a few years before. Nome's population had fallen steeply from its peak around 1900, and the people who stayed were more likely to be businessmen, saloon keepers, and families who had settled in for the long term. Local news was printed in the Nome Nugget, and residents followed the mining reports, the political fights over Alaska's territorial status, and the arrival of steamers from Seattle.
