Vasco da Gama stands in the prow of a small rowboat in this watercolor, his figure set against the water as if he is leading the way. Casanova made it around 1880 as an illustration for an 1880 edition of *Os Lusíadas*, the epic poem by Luís de Camões first published in 1572. The poem celebrates Portugal's voyages of discovery, with Gama's 1497–1499 sea route to India as its central story. The 1880 date matched the tercentenary of Camões's death, a year when Portugal marked the poet and his national epic with new editions and illustrations.
