This view of the first-base grandstand at Shibe Park shows the Philadelphia Athletics' home ballpark on the day of a 1913 World Series game, which the Athletics played against the New York Giants. Shibe Park opened in 1909 and was among the early major league parks built largely of steel and concrete, a design that helped make it a model for later stadiums. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures taken by the Bain News Service in New York. The image was made on a glass negative, a format that captured fine detail and was common for press photography of the period.
