Frank "Home Run" Baker, the Philadelphia Athletics third baseman, earned his nickname from his power at the plate, and he led the American League in home runs in several seasons before this picture was taken. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose photographers covered sports, theater and news for newspapers in the early 1900s. The date in the record is bracketed, meaning it was reconstructed by researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research rather than written on the negative, so it is best read as an informed estimate. Baker's reputation as a clutch hitter made him one of the best-known players of the deadball era.
