Wally Schang, the Philadelphia Athletics catcher, is shown during the 1913 World Series, and the original caption describes the moment as him making a home run. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, sent photographers to cover events like this one and distributed the pictures to newspapers. Its glass negatives, now held by the Library of Congress, preserve the look of sports news photography in the early 1910s, when the Athletics were one of the strongest teams in the American League and the Series was a major national event.
