Catcher Ira Thomas is shown here in his years with the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League, a club he caught for during the 1910s. Thomas was known more for his defense and his work handling pitchers than for his hitting, a reputation that suited a team built around Connie Mack's pitching staff. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news and sports photographs to newspapers, and its glass negatives now form part of the Library of Congress's Bain collection. The date appears in brackets because it was assigned through later research rather than recorded when the photograph was made.
