The Graybar Building rose on Lexington Avenue beside Grand Central Terminal around 1927, when the city's skyline was growing quickly. Its base and tower were set over the terminal's railroad approaches, a feat that made the project notable for its engineering as well as its architecture. This print carries a copyright notice naming Irving Underhill of New York, a photographer who documented the city's buildings during the 1920s. The image captures the building as a new arrival in midtown, when its setting among the rail yards and surrounding office towers was still taking shape.
