The hotel stands on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, a short walk from the edge, and it took its name from Pedro de Tovar, a Spanish officer who visited the rim in 1540 with García López de Cárdenas's expedition. The Fred Harvey Company opened the rustic log-and-stone lodge in 1905 to serve the growing number of railroad tourists who came to see the canyon. Stereo views like this one, issued by the Globe Stereoscopic Company of Chicago, were sold to visitors and armchair travelers who wanted to see the scenery in three dimensions.
