This view shows the Grand Canyon from the South Rim with the Hotel El Tovar in the foreground. The hotel opened in 1905 as a stop for travelers on the Santa Fe Railway's branch to the canyon, and it was run by the Fred Harvey Company, which built a string of railroad hotels and restaurants across the Southwest. It was named for García López de Cárdenas's lieutenant, Pedro de Tovar, a Spanish explorer who reached the rim in 1540. The Detroit Publishing Company, a major maker of views and postcards in the early 1900s, produced the image, which reflects how the canyon was marketed to tourists at the time.
