The dining room at El Tovar Hotel is the detail that sets this card apart from the many Grand Canyon views on the board: it shows the interior of the lodge rather than the canyon itself. El Tovar was built on the South Rim by the Santa Fe Railway, opening in 1905 as a luxury hotel meant to draw well-to-do travelers to the edge of the gorge. This stereograph, made around 1906 by the H.C. White Company, was one of the stereo cards sold to tourists who wanted to show friends back home how the grand new hotel looked. Its record notes that the caption information is unverified, so the card is best read as a period souvenir of the hotel's early years.
