The El Tovar Hotel, shown here on a Globe Stereoscopic Company card numbered 5323, stood on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as a lodging built for visitors arriving by rail. The Santa Fe Railway opened it in 1905, and the Fred Harvey Company ran its rooms and meals for travelers who came by train from Williams, Arizona. The hotel took its name from Pedro de Tovar, a Spanish officer who reached the rim with Coronado's expedition in 1540. Its rustic stone and timber design was meant to blend with the rim, and stereo cards like this one were made so viewers could see the canyon's depth.
