Set on the South Rim within sight of the canyon, the El Tovar Hotel was built to serve travelers arriving on the Santa Fe Railway's spur line. The Fred Harvey Company opened it in 1905, and it took its name from Pedro de Tovar, a Spanish officer who reached the rim with the 1540 expedition of García López de Cárdenas. This photoprint, copyrighted by G.W. Hance, shows the hotel from around the time it opened, when reaching the rim still meant a long journey across the Arizona high desert. The c1905 date comes from an unverified caption card, so treat it as approximate.
