From the grounds of Hotel El Tovar, this view looks across the South Rim toward the canyon's striped walls and distant gorges. The Fred Harvey Company opened the hotel in 1905, a log-and-stone lodge meant to give travelers a comfortable base for seeing the canyon, which the Santa Fe Railway had recently linked to the wider rail network. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold scenic views to tourists and collectors, issued the picture as one of many souvenir images of American landmarks. The caption date is unverified, so the print is best read as a record of early rim tourism.
