Its title, *1914! Les Assassins!* ("1914! The Murderers!"), places the blame on the German emperor and the eagles that the record names as its subjects, at the very start of the First World War. Maurice Neumont signed the lithograph in 1914, and his inscription dedicates it to Hansi, the Alsatian illustrator Jean-Jacques Waltz, whose caricatures of Germans were widely reproduced in France. Posters like this one circulated during the war's first year to rally public opinion behind the French army and to cast the conflict as a crime rather than a contest between nations.
