Marianne, the figure who personifies the French Republic, anchors this 1917 poster, and the drums that appear beside her signal a call to the public. The poster promotes a week-long campaign for Charente-Inférieure, a department on France's Atlantic coast, during the First World War, when wartime loans and appeals depended on public enthusiasm. Adolphe Willette, a Montmartre illustrator known for his satirical and sentimental work, signed it with the patriotic line "Vive la nation!" and dated it 1917.
