The sinking of the Lusitania gives this 1915 poster its urgency. The British liner was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the south coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915, and close to 1,200 people died, many of them drowning in the cold Atlantic. British recruiters used the disaster to press men to enlist, and this color lithograph, signed only "B.P.," ties the drowned civilians to a call for the sword of justice. Its subject headings also list war casualties and recruitment, which shows how the sinking was folded into wider wartime appeals.
