This 1916 German poster, titled "Gold zerschlägt Eisen" ("Gold Smashes Iron"), was designed by Jul Diez and urges viewers to bring their gold to a purchasing office. Its lithograph imagery pairs a dove, a long-standing symbol of peace, with the idea of gold overcoming iron, the metal of the war effort. Germany was then short of raw materials and funds, and the government ran campaigns to collect gold from citizens, which makes the poster a direct piece of wartime economic mobilization.
