Albert Sterner's 1917 Navy poster borrows its title from George M. Cohan's song "Over There," which became a hit that year after the United States entered the First World War. The record lists the United States Fuel Administration as a sponsor, a reminder that federal wartime agencies often shared posters and promotional space. Recruiting posters like this one were meant to draw young men into the Navy, and they were printed in large runs and displayed in post offices, storefronts and public buildings across the country. Sterner was an illustrator known for magazine and book work, so the color lithograph reflects the polished commercial art of the period.
