A 1917 color lithograph from the Hegeman Print company of New York advertises United States official films and features the Capitol in Washington, D.C., as its subject. During the First World War, the federal government used motion pictures to explain the war effort and build public support, and the Committee on Public Information, created in 1917, helped produce and circulate such films to theaters. Posters like this one invited local audiences into movie houses to see them, linking the national government to everyday entertainment. The Capitol as a symbol signals that these pictures carried official authority.
