Titled in French as a day for the African army and the colonial troops, this 1917 color lithograph is signed by the illustrator D. Charles Fouqueray. It is a large poster, printed on a scale meant for public walls, and it promoted the French colonial forces at a time when France relied heavily on soldiers from its African territories. Units such as the tirailleurs sénégalais from West Africa fought in the trenches and on other fronts. Posters like this one were part of a wartime effort to build home-front support for the empire's contribution to the war.
