Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, dominates this color lithograph, which advertises a show titled "Hero land!" at New York's Grand Central Palace, open November 24 to December 12 for 50 cents admission. Printed in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it reflects the wartime interest in French symbols and in the Allied cause. The poster is signed by an artist recorded as A. Rapeño of Paris. The record does not say what the exhibition presented, but the large, bold design shows how commercial and patriotic messages often overlapped in posters of that era.
