Soldiers of the 63rd Infantry pass in review before the U.S. Capitol on March 26, 1920, after the War Department assigned the regiment as a permanent unit of the District of Columbia National Guard. Its job was to guard the national Capitol in peacetime as well as in war, which made a local militia unit a fixture of the building's ceremonial life. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded the city's public events in the early twentieth century. The surviving glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
