The Senate wing of the United States Capitol is the subject here, shown as a large glass-plate negative made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American cities, scenery and public buildings, produced it, and the company's numbering on the record ties it to that larger catalog. The Senate chamber occupies the north wing of the building, which was enlarged in the nineteenth century, so the view captures a building that had by then taken on much of its familiar form. Its 8 by 10 inch format was typical of the period's careful work, when photographers used large negatives to record architectural detail.
