The Congressional Library, the library room housed in the U.S. Capitol, is the subject of this 1870 stereograph, a double-image card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Albumen prints like this one were the standard medium for stereo cards in that period, and the cards were sold widely as parlor entertainment and as a way to see famous interiors without travel. The room was then the working library of Congress, so the card captures a place that was both a public landmark and an active government institution.
