Rather than a view of the lake itself, this glass negative records a painting: William Henry Powell's 1873 canvas of the Battle of Lake Erie, fought September 10, 1813, which hangs at the U.S. Capitol. It shows Oliver Hazard Perry's American squadron engaging the British fleet during the War of 1812, a victory that gave the United States control of the lake and helped lead to the recovery of Detroit. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many such reproductions around 1904, photographed the work, so the picture documents an artwork as much as the battle it portrays.
