The painting shown here is the allegorical fresco that Constantino Brumidi placed in the canopy of the Capitol's rotunda dome, high above the floor and reached by a long climb through the building's interior. Brumidi, an Italian-born painter, spent much of his career decorating the Capitol, and he died in 1880 with the work still unfinished. This color photolithograph appeared in the *Washington Album*, a view book from the early 1890s that offered visitors a souvenir of the city's major sights. Its appearance in such a book shows how central the Capitol's painted interiors had become to how Americans pictured their national government.
