Taken from a Maryland Avenue entrance, this view follows a walkway across the Capitol grounds toward the building and its dome. The dome, a cast-iron structure finished in 1866 and crowned by Thomas Crawford's statue of Freedom, was the feature visitors saw first on the approach. Frederick Law Olmsted's landscape work on the grounds during the 1870s and 1880s gave these paths their planned, landscaped character. Views like this one show how the Capitol looked to people on foot before the mid-twentieth century.
