Unlike the battleships that usually fill this category, the *Scorpion* was a steam yacht, a fast private vessel that the United States Navy bought and put into government service. Navies of this era often acquired yachts like her for patrol, dispatch, and guard duty, a need that became clear during the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views of American towns, railroads, and waterways, made this large glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. The inscription "G 562" on the plate, along with the company's catalog number, helps trace it within the firm's extensive output.
