Elevation drawings show a building's exterior flat and straight-on, so each window, cornice, and column can be measured against the next. This sheet depicts the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., whose main building, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 after years of construction. Its design by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz drew on the Beaux-Arts classicism of the period, and the ink and watercolor wash give the stone facades their tonal depth. No date or draftsman is recorded for this particular sheet, so its origin is best confirmed through the Library's catalog.
