This sheet shows the Library of Congress in flat front and side elevations rather than as a view from the street. Elevation drawings set out a building's faces to scale without perspective, so architects, builders and officials could check proportions, window placement and ornament. The mix of ink, graphite and wash points to a drawing meant to show shading and the massing of stone walls, not just outlines. The Library's main building on Capitol Hill, the Thomas Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 in an ornate Beaux-Arts style, and drawings like this one are useful records of how such a design was worked out on paper.
