Two flat, straight-on views of the building's facade and side wall make up this ink drawing, which shows the Library of Congress as an architectural plan rather than as a scene. Elevation drawings like these let builders and reviewers check proportions, window placement, and ornament without the distortion of perspective. The library's main building on Capitol Hill, completed in 1897 to designs by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, was an exemplar of Beaux-Arts architecture in the United States. Drawings of this kind show how the architects planned its massing and detail.
