Rendered in ink, this front perspective presents the Library of Congress as its designers intended it to look on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The library had outgrown its space in the Capitol, and Congress authorized a separate building to house its growing collections, which opened in 1897 as the Thomas Jefferson Building. Drawings like this one record the design intent behind a structure whose Beaux-Arts ornament and monumental façade were meant to express the nation's commitment to learning.
