The ink and gouache drawing shows the front elevation of the Library of Congress, the Capitol Hill institution whose main building now bears Thomas Jefferson's name. That building was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897 after years of construction. Elevation drawings like this one let architects, builders and officials check proportions, ornament and window placement before stone was set. The gouache adds tonal wash to the ink lines, which helps suggest how the finished facade would catch light.
